Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. It is the least populous of Australia’s capital cities. Darwin provides an important link to South-east Asia. Darwin is home to Fannie Bay Gaol. This prison was opened in 1883. For about a century it was a major detention centre. Now it is one of Darwin’s historic sites. The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens displays the plant life of Northern Australia and other tropical habitats. Visitors can see coastal fore dunes, mangroves and open woodlands. The place is also home of the Wesleyan Church.

Tourists wanting to see and learn about marine life can go to the Indo Pacific Marine. It is Darwin’s only living marine environment centre. The centre is one of three exhibitions of its type in the world. Popular at this centre is the ‘coral reef by night’ program. The program’s popularity means it is important to book early. It is held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
