INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITY OF SUNSHINE COAST

The University of the Sunshine Coast, through its NEAS accredited English Language Centre, will continue to strengthen its study tour program during 2004.

A distinctive feature of these ELC programs is their ability to meet niche school study tour market needs. For example, programs for study tours originating in Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong are designed to complement the curriculum goals for each country, while at the same time enhancing student English language proficiency.

We adopt an integrated cross-cultural approach, involving the delivery of practical language situations in the classroom and homestay environments.

USC is strengthening its reputation as a provider of relevant and progressive education, by offering, in 2004, a new Core Course, COR110 Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship.

All students enrolling in undergraduate degree programs will now need to complete COR110 during their first year of study. The rationale is that innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship are critical twenty-first century attributes and are crucial for the development of a student's life-long learning strategies.

Academic staff from each of the University's faculties, along with experienced industry partners from the award winning USC Innovation Centre Business Incubator, will teach COR110.

Sucessful students at University of Sunshine Coast!

Two Brazilian students, Rosane Blanco and Eduardo Ramallion, have received media acknowledgement, for the small business enterprises they have set-up on the Sunshine Coast.

Rosane Blanco, a final year International Business student, is about to launch her first bikini design range. Her designs are strongly influenced by traditional Brazilian bikini lines. The range will be launched at a fashionable Sunshine Coast venue during the summer. Local buyers have already shown strong commercial interest in Rosane's bikinis.

Rosane has developed a comprehensive marketing plan for her bikini range attributing her University studies in Promotions Management, and Sport and Event Marketing as being particuarly industry relevant to her December product launch.

And, Eduardo Ramallion, an ELICOS student, has started a small business in capoeira instruction. Capoeira combines elements of dance and martial arts. Eduardo has identified market interest in capoeira instruction on the Coast. He says that he started this small business, “not only to make some extra money but also because I love capoeira dance”.
Eduardo also spends some of his spare time working as a waiter. He has found this experience to be invaluable in improving his conversational and practical English.

Other students choose different pathways, including internships, provided by the University of the Sunshine Coast to experience Australian business organisations.

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s Innovation Centre has just been named Regional Business Incubator of the Year by the Australian and New Zealand Association of Business Incubators. This award reflects the substantial progress the Centre has made since its launch in February 2002. Along with its demonstrated leadership in flexible physical design, the award recognises the Business Incubator as a world-class management system, designed to help start-up companies commercialise and launch new products and services, focusing on smart technology adoption.

Since its opening, the Innovation Centre has been used as an exemplar of good practice by other business incubators in the UK, Germany, China, South Africa, Brazil, New Zealand and Australia.

With its planned expansion this year, the Innovation Centre will become the largest technology business incubator of its kind in Australia.

The Innovation Centre is also involved in planning the Innovation, Science and Technology Park, which will form an intergral part of a University-centred Knowledge Precinct. It is envisaged that the Park will provide employment for 2,100 knowledge workers, advancing the knowledge economy of the Sunshine Coast.

Opportunities now exist for students in a number of University courses to work with businesses in the Innovation Centre. Such workplace experience enables students to gain valuable related knowledge and skills, the development of which are critically important in their search to find rewarding industry careers.
